The Publishers' Dilemma

Our Solution For Publishers

Publishers today carry most of the burden and risk in making printed books. The cost of printing is rising, while the bookstores and reading public want the price of books to be as was 10 to 15 years ago. In order to get their books carried in large bookstores, the publishers must offer a 55% discount to the bookstore, while pricing their book to cover the cost of printing. Changes is printed books require a reprint of the entire book. Publishers producing eBooks can gain more profit by eliminating the printing cost, but are unsure of the actual sales of eBooks since they can be copied.

For example, a small publishing house that produces eBooks in PDF format, sells perhaps one per year to online websites that then resell the book. There is no way to track how many copies of this PDF file, the online store has sold. The publisher is often only paid for a single copy. Amazon's Kindle format has at least resolved this issue, in that they are paying the publisher per copy sold.

A publisher will spend time and money formatting a book to perfection and ensuring the quality of the text, the illustrations and the cover. In switching to a digital copy in a format such as PDF, the publisher can reproduce the the beauty of the original book closely. However, with current technology on the Mobipocket and Kindle books, much of this original formatting is lost.

Also, to date, the digital versions of books are still in what is print technology and a book is a single file, making the tracking of interactive content difficult. Adobe has made moves towards this, but Kindle and Mobipocket are static representations of a book, without the original formatting.

However, both Mobipocket and Kindle are good starts on moving publishers and readers to digital book reading devices. It is time though to consider a more elegant solution to the publisher's problems of:

  • Secure sales of digital eBooks
  • Payment per copy of eBook sold
  • Protection on copyrighted material
  • Addition of external or extra content such as notes, annimation, and music or voice without disturbing the original book
Publishers producing books in IBF format will have the advantage of:
  • Maintaining the formatting of the original book
  • Ensuring quality of images and cover art
  • Approving extra or external content such as movies, sound, etc. to be associated with their book while their original copyrighted material is protected
  • Securely delivering their digital book content
  • Being paid per digital item sold
  • Updating a part of a book while mainting the original copyrighted material
  • Reduced cost in production per sale
  • Increased sales in partial book content as well as the entire book
